Pool, Sea, SPF: How To Help Summer Sets Last Longer
Why summer can affect nail sets...
During summer, clients are often exposing their nails to more than they would during a normal week. Swimming, applying SPF, spending time in the heat, using hand sanitiser while travelling and going longer between appointments can all have an impact.
This does not mean clients should avoid summer activities, but it does mean they need to be more mindful of how they look after their nails.
As nail techs, it’s important to explain that a long-lasting set is a partnership. You create the correct foundation in the salon through prep, product choice, structure and cure, but the client’s aftercare helps maintain the result once they leave.

1. Rinse hands after swimming
Chlorine and salt water can be drying to the skin and nail area, especially when clients are swimming regularly throughout a holiday. Dryness around the cuticle area can make the nails look less fresh and may also encourage clients to pick at dry skin, which can affect the overall wear of their set.
A simple rinse, dry and cuticle oil application can make a big difference.

2. Be mindful with SPF
SPF is non negotiable for skin protection, but many sun creams and tanning products contain oils or ingredients that can leave a residue on the skin and around the nail area.
Advise your clients to wash their hands after applying sun cream, especially if they have been rubbing product around the fingers and cuticles.

3. Keep using cuticle oil
Daily cuticle oil helps keep the surrounding skin nourished and supports a healthier-looking manicure between appointments.
Remind clients to apply oil once or twice a day, especially after swimming, showering or washing their hands. A well-nourished nail area helps the set look fresher for longer.

4. Don’t use nails as tools
Holiday mode can be risky for nails. Opening cans, peeling labels, packing suitcases, carrying heavy bags, pulling at swimwear tags and beach activities can all put extra pressure on a set.
A simple phrase to share with clients is: your nails are jewels, not tools.

5. Book infills at the right time
As the natural nail grows, the structure moves forward. This can increase the risk of lifting, cracks or breakages, especially on longer sets.
Encourage clients to book their next appointment before they go away, or to plan their infill around their holiday dates. This helps keep the nail balanced, strong and looking its best.

6. Choose the right service for the client’s summer plans
Not every client needs the same summer set. Some clients may be perfectly suited to a short BUILD & BOOST™ overlay, while others may need the extra strength of SCULPT & BOOST™ Hard Gel.
When choosing the right service, consider:
- The client’s natural nail condition
- Their usual retention
- The length they want
- Whether they are going on holiday
- Their lifestyle and aftercare habits
- How long they will go between appointments
Final thoughts
As nail techs, educating clients is one of the best ways to support better retention, healthier nails and more realistic expectations. A few simple reminders before a holiday can help clients enjoy their nails for longer and return to their next appointment with fewer issues.
The best summer sets start in the salon, but they last with the right aftercare.
